There are four mobile phone providers in Hungary:
They have roaming agreements with other mobile phone providers throughout the world. Check out with your mobile phone provider, whether you can use your mobile phone in Hungary.
The use of mobile phones while driving is forbidden, except through a built-in speaker-phone set.
There are public phone-boxes at all busy places throughout the country (especially in post offices). Most of them work with telephone cards, which you can buy at post offices and news agents. Some public phones work with coins. It is recommended to use at least 20 Ft-coins for domestic and 100 Ft-coins for international calls. If the time is up, after some seconds of warning tone signal, the communication will automatically be cut off. Public phone-boxes have a telephone number and can be called back. The number usually can be found above the handset.
There are a couple of telephone providers in Hungary, each of them serving a particular region (except for the mobile telephone companies, which serve the whole country). The telephone providers have slightly different, but approximately the same rates. Domestic calls are cheaper after 6PM and before 7AM. International calls cost the same all day from USD 0.35/min up to USD 2,50/min depending on country. Calls to neighbouring countries, Western-Europe and the USA are the cheapest. Hotels usually put an extra charge (up to 150%) on calls from hotel rooms.
