The M1 metro (also called Földalatti Vasút) was opened in 1896 for the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Conquest as the first electric underground line on the European mainland. Its inner height and accordingly the metro cars are smaller than regular metro facilities giving the impression of traveling by tramway underground. It was restored in its classical style in 1996. The M1 line connects the city center (Vaci utca) with East-Budapest and provides access to the following attractions and facilities (from city center to east): The M2 metro line was opened in 1970 and operates still with traditional Soviet-style cars. It connects Buda with Pest (under the Danube).
