In Budapest, an official price ceiling is applied to taxi fare rates. Taxis may charge less, but mustn't charge more than below:
|   | Daytime Tariff (06.00am-10.00pm) | Night Tariff (10.00pm-06.00am) |
| Startup Charge | 200 Ft | 280 Ft |
| Fare | 200 Ft / km | 280 Ft / km |
| Waiting Charge | 50 Ft / min. | 70 Ft / min. |
These rates are valid for trips starting in Budapest including the International Airport. If your destination is outside the city, the driver may require payment of the return fare to the city border.
Fare rates are usually lower, if you call the taxi by phone. If you take a taxi in the street and sometimes also if it's the hotel personnel, who call the taxi by phone, rates are somewhat higher (up to 30%).
In other cities beyond Budapest, there is usually no price ceiling on taxi rates, however, fares are mostly lower.
All taxis are equipped with taxi meters, which print the receipts at the end of the journey. Upon request, the driver makes out an invoice for you to reclaim the VAT.
A tip of about 10% is usually given to the driver.
You can search in the telephone directory for taxi companies throughout Hungary. Enter the word "Taxi" or "taxi" in the name field and the name of the city in the settlement field of the query form.
